The position will work closely with NRCS staff and Ducks Unlimited biologists, engineers, and land protection specialists, and other agency and NGO staff delivering waterfowl conservation programs in the Delmarva targeting American Black Duck habitat conservation.
The primary goal for this position will be to coordinate with NRCS field staff to increase participation in the federal Farm Bill conservation programs focused on waterfowl habitat and to assist private landowners with implementing conservation practices.
Focus of the program will be within the Black Duck priority areas in Delmarva.
Candidate must have at a minimum a Bachelor of Science Degree in a natural resources or agricultural field. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of state and federal lands protection programs and applicable laws, and state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies and laws.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills are necessary, including the ability to approach and establish dialogue with a range of stakeholders.
Proven writing, organizational and basic administrative skills are desired, as is a track record in successful partnership building.
Experience with identification of wetland restoration sites and GIS mapping is desirable, and proficiency in computer business hardware and software is required. Experience working with conservation NGOs or federal and state fish and wildlife agencies would be a plus, as would knowledge of the Delmarva landscape.
Specific duties are described below. Identify and solicit willing landowners to cooperate in USDA Farm Bill conservation programs focused on waterfowl, targeting black duck habitat conservation.
Assist interested landowners in enrolling in and implementing NRCS conservation programs and practices. Training will be provided. Provide onsite support for implementation of habitat management plans and wetland restoration designs.
Advise landowners about opportunities to participate in voluntary conservation programs available from federal, state, NGO and other organizations. Coordinate restoration and land protection activities with other organizations and partners.
Develop relationship with the farming community at all levels local farmer, agribusiness personnel, government agency staff, extension services staff. Assist in developing press releases, articles presentations, and meetings that increase public awareness of Working Lands for Wildlife and conservation programs available through the Farm Bill.
