The metamorphosis theme

Metamorphosis, the process of transformation from an Immature form to an Adult form in two or more distinct stages. The Project Explained This pack of cards was created for a college project.

The brief we were given was very open in terms of what we could create, however whatever it was we created had to show metamorphosis of some kind. As you can see from the images above, following the theme of metamorphosis, I created a pack of playing cards displaying the process of transformation of a hand created decorative letter.

The Aim My aim for this project was to create something that would successfully display the creation of a decorative letter, from its initial sketch, to its final state.

In order to fullfil this aim I had to create a letter form out of a number of different processes and display all of these processes clearly. The Process When coming up with all of my initial ideas I came upon the idea of creating a pack of playing cards.

I thought this would be a perfect way to display the progression of the letterform as a suit progresses from Ace to King, giving me 13 cards to display the processes clearly, with one process on each card. With the idea in mind I had to plan out just how the processes would fit onto this number of cards.

And each card between the 2nd and 10th card showed the developmental process within 9 a total of stages. When it came to designing the Jack, Queen and King cards, i decided on going for a very simplistic appearance.

Ability vs Disability

My reason for doing this was beacause I wanted all of the cards to link in well with eachother and I felt that in using the characters themselves it took away the focus on the other cards and it also just didnt seem to fit in with the entire theme of the pack. For the design on the back of the cards, I played around with various detailed designs, following a more traditional route, however I felt that this style of design didnt fit in well with the overall appearance of the deck.

This worked really well and created the exact appearance I was aiming for.Alienation is a theme in Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis.” At a young age, Gregor finds that he is responsible for the support of his family and cannot for the life of him see a way out of his situation.
